Some people breathe heavily when they sleep. Others make a soft whistling sound, and still others snore loudly.

Snoring doesn’t necessarily mean that you have a medical condition, but it can sometimes be a sign of a serious sleep disorder, including sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is characterized by loud snoring followed by a few seconds of quiet because of a pause in breathing. This is followed by another loud sound, like a snort, then the snoring resumes.

Snoring is common—as many as 45% of people snore sometimes, and 25% snore almost all the time. Men tend to snore more often than women.

What factors contribute to snoring?

A number of factors can contribute to snoring like weight gain or obesity, age, abnormal nasal and facial anatomy, abnormal throat conditions like large tongue, elongated soft palate, enlarged tonsils or adenoids, allergies, smoking, use of alcohol, medications like some antidepressants or muscle relaxants, smoking and many other factors.

What are the effects of snoring?

Evidence based research has shown that chronic habitual snoring can frequently be a sign of more serious conditions and can eventually lead to Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Untreated and prolonged snoring can cause disturbed sleep, both for the snorer and bed partner, and also predispose to issues like high or uncontrolled blood pressure, diabetes, inflammation and also mental and emotional problems like irritability and depression. Snoring has also been reported to be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and stroke. In children, snoring may be a sign of problems with enlarged tonsils and adenoids and improper daytime breathing.

How do I know if I am a snorer?

A person is usually unaware that he or she snores. You may wake up feeling tired and unrested. The person may have a dry mouth, sore throat or headaches upon waking up. There may be problems with excessive daytime sleepiness, depression, irritability impaired concentration, decreased libido. Frequently a disgruntled spouse or a family member is the one who points out to this problem. Similar to health problems associated with second hand smoking, ” Second Hand Snorers” i.e the bed partner or family member suffers from health effects of sleep deprivation.
